Archive for Reds

Hello again to my gathering of loyal readers. Well, it appears we will have football this year but I think the first few weeks are going to be very crazy for many teams due to many new free agent players and a lack of preparation time. On the surface, it appears to be a good deal for both sides. The players got a larger salary cap with a larger cap floor, health benefits for retired players, and more days off from practice to reduce wear and tear. The owners get ten years of peace and a rookie salary scale. Trying to handicap the race this year, though, will be anyone’s guess. I foresee many roster moves in fantasy football throughout the season.

The Reds are continuing to plod in mediocrity while still staying in the race. While many positions have been suggested for trades, I feel the greatest needs are 3rd base and RH relief pitching. Rolen is finished and Massett is very ineffective. I don’t know if Alonzo is the answer in LF with his lack of experience at that position, but his bat should be a major upgrade. SS will be OK once Cozart’s elbow heals. At that point, Renteria should be sent packing. He has lost too much range to play SS anymore.

I sincerely hope Washington gets their act together. The ambivalence is wrecking havoc with businesses due to the fact that the country’s credit rating may have a large effect on interest rates and the ability of businesses to borrow to meet their needs. These games being played in the Capitol have real consequences on Main St. The only spending reductions that really count are the ones promised for this year and next. Beyond that it is meaningless hollow promises because a future congress can change the budge on a whim. The only constraint that will have any lasting meaning is a balanced budget amendment or a rule tying spending to a certain percent range of GDP. Outside of that, all else is empty rhetoric.

Until next week, Doc.

Greetings from Doc on May 19. It’s been an interesting week. Betty on our office staff celebrated another 21st birthday last Wednesday. The staff all went out to O’Charleys to observe the happy occasion. Betty continues to be a treasure for our office.

On the sports front, my Reds are now in 1st place. I don’t expect it to last long, but I’ll enjoy the ride. They have been getting ultra timely hitting and good pitching. My favorite NBA team, the Boston Celtics, also appear on the verge of going to the finals. It’s always nice to see team play rewarded.

The primary elections were this week. I hope you voted. If not, shame on you and don’t complain. My only real surprise was that the incumbents on City Council won so easily with all the complaints about how Louisville is being managed. The political animal saw his shadow so we will be stuck with six more months of ads and commercials.

I hope you are as excited as I to see the upcoming Lost finale on Sunday. It will be an interesting conclusion to see how the two realities will merge and hopefully see good triumph over evil.

Finally, I couldn’t close without mentioning one of my pet peeves, drive-thru lanes. While they can sometimes be a time saver, often they are nothing but a time waster and more importantly, a FUEL waster. At a time when the nation is concerned about our dependence on foreign energy, we could each do our part by not wasting away in a drive-thru for 20 or 30 minutes but park and get some exercise. Last week I went to McDonald’s for breakfast. There were at least 10 cars in the drive-thru when I got there and still at least 10 after I was finished eating. Worst of all, when I walked in there was not one person at the counter! Often I am in and out while the same cars are still waiting in line. I have a 3 car rule. I never enter a drive-thru if more than 3 cars are in line. Think about it.

Well, that’s all for this week. Take care, Doc.

May 11 a Potpourri of Comments

Posted by: | Comments (0)

This week will be a potpourri of comments. On an up note, the Reds and Bats both seem to be headed in the right direction. The Reds are now in 2nd place, albeit in a weak division. They still could use another big bat in the lineup but that is too much to hope. Too bad Tiger had to drop out of a tourney with a sore neck. Maybe his mistresses could alternate following him around the course to massage it for him.

We lost one of my favorite performers this week, Lena Horne. A great performer who always carried herself with astounding grace and dignity. She will be greatly missed.

I see the Bengals signed Pacman Jones to a two year contract. Do the suicide bombers play football? Maybe they can sign them next!

I’ve been noticing a lot of criticism of Arizona’s new illegal immigration law. If the federal government would stick to the things they are supposed to do (national defense), we wouldn’t have this problem. It’s easy to criticize when you don’t live there and have to put up with the drug dealers and criminals who are here illegally to do illegal acts! I haven’t heard any critic offer any solutions as of yet. If you don’t have any ideas about solving the problem, just shut up! Well, that’s all for this week.
