Until Next Year…
Posted by: | CommentsHello again to my loyal sum of readers. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas. It seems, however, that a few monsters have to spoil it for the rest of us. Yes, Virginia, there are monsters. They come disguised as parents who will fight, claw, trample and whatever else is necessary to get the latest and greatest toy gun, electronic gizmo, or (gulp!) fill in the blank sneakers. Do you really need to fight over shoes? What kind of example are you setting for your kids in the season of sharing and caring with behavior such as this? You need to go back to parenting school if you have children who can’t get by without a particular brand of gym shoe. This is not what Christmas is all about, but apparently, you didn’t get the message.
I discovered another pet peeve over the holidays. Holding family gift exchanges in restaurants. Many kids in restaurants behave badly enough on their own without the added incentive of presents to open. If you are too put upon to host at your house, then rent a private room if you want a family Christmas party. Don’t inflict your revelry on the rest of us.
Lastly, I was really moved by our Christmas Eve service at Messiah-Trinity. Our choir was excellent and my praise is especially exuberant for the job of our special musicians, Michael Allen on trumpet and Bridgette McAuliffe on the flute. You added an exquisite flavor to the service that was wholly satisfying. Well, in closing, I wish everyone a Happy New Year 2012 and may all your resolutions be kept and wishes come true.
Until next year, Doc.
Giving thanks this Christmas season
Posted by: | CommentsHello again to my loyal clique of readers. Well, the Reds have pulled the trigger on a big trade. On the surface, it appears to benefit both teams. However, the Reds did give up their two best potential contact hitters – a commodity they have in too short supply. The Reds must now open the purse strings for a RH good leftfielder and a good closer. They also must hope Latos doesn’t come down with a bad arm which many Red pitchers seem to succumb. If everything goes correctly, the Reds should strongly contend this year.
On another front, the Bengals got help this past weekend, but still must win out and have the Jets lose a game. Tiebreakers in the NFL must be strange. Two weeks ago, the Bengals and Jets were tied. At that time the Bengals owned the tiebreaker. It is now two weeks later and they are still tied, but now the Jets own the tiebreaker. A very weird system indeed..
Christmas is now upon us. ‘Tis the season to be caring and thoughtful. I know my staff was very thoughtful with two wonderful presents. Even though Thanksgiving is when you are supposed to be thankful, I find my thoughts gravitating in that direction at Christmastime. I am very thankful for my caring church family at Messiah-Trinity and my wonderful office staff that make my practice of dentistry a special place. In this blessed season we all must remember the One who makes it all possible. Without Him, all of us would be lost. I wish all of you and yours a special Christmas and an even better 2012.
Until next week/year, Doc.
Fairs, Fall Carnival, and Fantasy Football
Posted by: | CommentsHello again to my loyal posse. I hope everyone had a wonderful time at the fair. I know I did. The 60’s oldies concert was amazing. It’s a blast to go to a concert and only hear the greatest hits. I hope everyone filled up on cavity causing sugary snacks! J.K.
I would like to put in a plug for my church’s Fall Carnival coming up on Saturday, September 17 at around 9:00 a.m. There will be food, bouncers, music, a corn-hole tournament, bake sale and yard sale. All to support our mission work at Messiah-Trinity, 8701 Shepherdsville Road.
Well, I’ve taken the plunge into fantasy football once again. I must be a glutton for punishment. It seems the players aren’t aware they are supposed to have a good game because they are on my team. Sometimes they even have the nerve to get injured. Imagine that! I’ll keep you posted on how the season goes.
Lastly, I would like to put in a plug for two tomes I have recently completed. The first is “Dick Van Dyke, my lucky life in and out of show business.” This is a life story of an actor I have always admired and respected for sticking to his family oriented shows and movies. The book is a fascinating behind the look view of his life and career. The second book is “Mike Huckabee – Do the Right Thing,” an opinionated look at what is wrong with government and society today. His main sermon is a good one. We are vastly over regulated and overly controlled, and none of it would be necessary if we would just “Do the Right Thing” – i.e. what we know we should do but don’t. I highly recommend both of these reads.
Until next week, Doc.
French lessons and TV finales
Posted by: | CommentsBon-jour,
That’s for my preacher who just returned from France. I hope they had a wonderful trip. Speaking of church (Messiah Trinity) our choir, under my humble direction, just completed another season with two wonderful anthems this past Sunday. My kudos to them for all their hard work. On the other hand, our softball team is off to a rough start (0-2). I don’t know if we regressed or the league has progressed.
I don’t know about you, but I object to 90 degrees in May. That is July weather. What’s going to come in July? I refuse to walk the golf course when it’s over 90 degrees. Even high 80’s gives me pause to consider riding.
Wonderful news that forward Terrence James signed with Uof K. That should give us quality and depth at every position. Now if we just hang onto our coach!
I guess I’ll go into TV series withdrawal for a while with the passing finales of two of my favorite shows, Grey’s Anatomy and Lost. I found the Lost finale very satisfying with the 815 crew living out their lives, or not in some cases, and then reuniting to go to heaven. A very rewarding ending. My feelings on Grey’s, however, were not as rosy. While very dramatic, it was in no way realistic. No police department would allow a shooter to wander around a hospital killing for two hours in the age of cell-phones and instant communication. The police ought to sue the writers for slander.
Well, that about wraps it up for this week.
Au revoir, Doc
