Archive for election

Hello again to my loyal posse of readers!

Thank goodness another election has come and gone. It appears the 2 sides mostly played to a draw with most incumbents unfortunately retaining their positions. People say they want things different but keep voting the same losers into office.

On the sports side, the Kentucky Wildcats are off to a great start even though they are still much a work in progress. They remind me a lot of Arkansas’ championship “40 minutes of hell” team with the pressure they exert. This could be a special season if we can stay injury-free and get better point guard play. I think the college games will be much different this year with the adopting of the NBA no-charge zone under the basket. No longer can players take chances and expect weak side help to slide in and take a charge. Expect to see more layups and dunks this year as a result.

I noted with interest a segment on 60 Minutes about the lack of investments regulations pertaining to congress. It seems that rules apply to everyone but them. It is legal for members of congress and they alone to do insider trading. They can buy and sell stocks whose price will be influenced by their own upcoming legislation to which no one else has privy. They have made millions by using this information. This is highly illegal for everyone else. They also can legally dispense this information to others in exchange for campaign support. All attempts to outlaw these practices have gone nowhere. It is no wonder they go to any lengths to keep their positions in congress. It is a money bonanza. Throw the bums out.

Until next week,
Doc

Kentucky Re-elects Steve Beshear Election Vote PoliticsHello again to my gathering of readers. Well, another election has come and gone and once again voters in Kentucky have elected the same ol’ same ol’. People say they want a better Kentucky but keep voting in the same regime that accomplishes nothing. The only thing that ever changes is the amount of our debt. Our governor sneakily misrepresented our budget by using emergency funds, government monies, and future borrowing to disguise the seriousness of the deficit. Now what will he do?

I read with interest an article in Time Magazine about the ability or lack thereof to get ahead in America today. They concluded two things. First that we have too few middle class jobs created in this country. The new jobs are at the extremes of the pay scale – service sector versus technology. Also that the economy is out of balance because we are overpaying for the service sector jobs thereby driving up the prices. The second conclusion is an old one; that we are falling badly behind in education. Our students go to school fewer days and fewer hours than in other countries and while other countries are focusing on math, science, and technology; we study sports, leisure, and whatever other crazy degrees can be dreamed up. They strongly urged finding completely new ways to educate students utilizing technology and to push the obstructionist NEA aside.

It is becoming ridiculous the amount on fees and permits now being thrust upon us by government, banks, and utilities. Building this expansion has been a real eye opener. Not only do they delay as long as possible allowing you to get started, but you get further delays along the way waiting on the different factions to sign off on steps and argue over minutia. One day we will wake up and have to pay a fee to leave your house and need a permit to park in your own garage.

Until next week, Doc.

Hello again to my loyal troop of readers. Aren’t you glad you don’t live up east? It’s way too early for snow! I still have a few more golf rounds to get in and I don’t play in cold weather.

The Bengals won again, but the next few weeks will be a test as they have to play Pittsburgh and Baltimore in their own division. Then we will see where they really are in their progress. So far, I like the moves the Reds have made. They retained Brandon Phillips and not Coco Cordero. It’s time for a new closer in town. They also cut Maloney and Burton who did not figure in future plans. A good trade or two are hopefully in the near future. They still need a starting pitcher and a solid backup for SS and 3B.

How do you like the new TV season so far? Some shows are gone already. The two shows I’m getting hooked on are Tim Allen’s new comedy on Tuesday at 8 and the drama Terra Nova on Monday at 8. However, I am very picky about my TV watching and only regularly watch a half dozen shows or less.

Well, as it’s election time next week, I thought I’d take a moment to comment. Since Kentucky is still near the bottom in every recognizable category, don’t you think change should be in order? As long as we keep allowing the “good-old-boy” political network to keep choosing our candidates, nothing will ever change. Remember the oft quoted definition of insanity! If we are ever going to progress, we need some outside the network candidates who are willing to change the status quo and try something new. I for one am tired of being at the bottom of the barrel and want a state for which I can be proud and not embarrassed.

Until next week, Doc.
