Lent Begins This Week

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Hello again band of loyal readers.  Another big win for the Cats.  Mississippi State threw all they had at UK but in the end it didn’t matter.  The Cats have so many weapons available and one or two always come through.  Next up is Vanderbilt at home on Saturday.

I noted with disdain the anti-bullying bill in Wednesday’s Courier-Journal, House Bill 1169.  This bill would effectively give school officials the ability to control everything students say or post 24-7.  Once again, our freedom is being curtailed by the establishment in favor of security.  All of the “liberty” groups have come out opposing this.  Schools already have Gestapo-like control while at school.  We simply cannot allow them to control all speech all the time.  While I sympathize with those who are victims, this bill cannot pass constitutional muster.

This week also marks the beginning of lent.  Once again we are reminded of the sacrifice Jesus made for our sins.  Without grace, we are nothing.  For the next six weeks my church will be doing a journey on compassion, something we all need to have increased.

My office is getting closer to completion, but the closer we get the more glitches we find.  This is very frustrating.  Wake me up when it’s over.

Until next week,  Doc.

Kentucky Re-elects Steve Beshear Election Vote PoliticsHello again to my gathering of readers. Well, another election has come and gone and once again voters in Kentucky have elected the same ol’ same ol’. People say they want a better Kentucky but keep voting in the same regime that accomplishes nothing. The only thing that ever changes is the amount of our debt. Our governor sneakily misrepresented our budget by using emergency funds, government monies, and future borrowing to disguise the seriousness of the deficit. Now what will he do?

I read with interest an article in Time Magazine about the ability or lack thereof to get ahead in America today. They concluded two things. First that we have too few middle class jobs created in this country. The new jobs are at the extremes of the pay scale – service sector versus technology. Also that the economy is out of balance because we are overpaying for the service sector jobs thereby driving up the prices. The second conclusion is an old one; that we are falling badly behind in education. Our students go to school fewer days and fewer hours than in other countries and while other countries are focusing on math, science, and technology; we study sports, leisure, and whatever other crazy degrees can be dreamed up. They strongly urged finding completely new ways to educate students utilizing technology and to push the obstructionist NEA aside.

It is becoming ridiculous the amount on fees and permits now being thrust upon us by government, banks, and utilities. Building this expansion has been a real eye opener. Not only do they delay as long as possible allowing you to get started, but you get further delays along the way waiting on the different factions to sign off on steps and argue over minutia. One day we will wake up and have to pay a fee to leave your house and need a permit to park in your own garage.

Until next week, Doc.
